The Ed Melikian Ensemble :::
Ed Melikian is an oudist and vocalist specializing in the music of the near and middle east. He has toured throughout the United States and abroad and has been performing and recording professionally for well over 6 decades. Before releasing his latest recording featuring his own band, The Ed Melikian Ensemble, Ed recorded several albums with many of the top musicians and singers in the World Music genre. His repertoire consists of authentic music of Armenian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic and Israeli cultures, melded together with western, jazz-flavored improvisational flare. In the mid to late 1970's, Ed appeared on 3 of George Abdo's belly dance albums. Over the years The Ed Melikian Ensemble has featured some very talented musicians. The current band has Gary Kashmanian on dumbeg – an hourglass-shaped drum, Bruce Gigarjian on guitar, master musician Mal Barsamian on clarinet, and Ed on the oud, an ancient stringed instrument first discovered in Persia in the 7th century that predates all other stringed instruments. Ed is also the featured Oudist on four CD's released by the 9-piece Folk/Rock/Jazz/Indie group, Jubilee Gardens, and was featured on Ryan Flaherty's Hungry Moon CD as well as the group, Hat On Drinking Wine’s CD Plastic Flowers.
Ed has released two cd's of his own: (1) The Ed Melikian Ensemble UNVEILED featuring Mal Barsamian on Alto Sax; (2) Homage to Leon featuring the late Leon Manoogian on dumbeg. Ed can be reached by email at: oudplayer@hotmail.com
